Stress and Your Health

Do you ever experience stress? In this day and age, the answer is probably a resounding “YES!” Perhaps a more appropriate question to ask is who doesn’t? From the young child facing demands at school, to the elderly and everyone in between, it seems that nobody is immune to this ever-increasing reality of life. We all have individual stress triggers that we deal with on a daily basis, from juggling chaotic schedules, financial struggles, work demands, and family responsibilities, just to name a few.

Recent evidence indicates that the physical changes associated with stress may contribute to the leading causes of death – heart disease and cancer. The effects of stress include the following: chronic fatigue, digestive problems, headaches, and back pain, inability to fight off infection, increased blood pressure, and greater risk of stroke, heart attacks, increased asthma attacks, and more. Stress can also trigger behaviors that contribute to poor health and disability, such as smoking, alcohol and drug abuse, and overeating.

So, we know that stress can have a negative impact on our health, but how does this happen? You see, the nervous system is different from most of the other systems within the body. Not only is it the only means for our brain to send those life-giving messages throughout our entire body, but it is also the monitor of the body’s stress level.

Because stress is a natural part of life, what can a person do to prevent and cope with stress? Here are some tips: Don’t worry about things you can’t control. Try to look at change as a positive challenge, and not as a threat. Talk with a trusted friend, family member or counselor. Set realistic goals at home and at work. Take care of yourself spiritually, through fellowship, meditation and prayer. Take care of yourself physically, through regular exercise, eating well-balanced meals, getting adequate rest, and of course, by keeping your nervous system working at peak performance, with regular checkups to detect and correct subluxation.
